Thinking Outside (and Inside) the Box
What we do behind the scenes to keep our business ethical, sustainable, and pushing towards a healthier environment for everyone.
These days it is near impossible to avoid the news about the state of our planet’s health, and rightfully so. Maybe you’ve seen images of the mountains of trash in the landfills and maybe you’ve heard we’re running out of room to store our rubbish. You might have heard about the environmental impact of factory farms and the impact of the globalisation on our food systems. Perhaps you’ve read about climate change, food miles, or food waste and the ways in which we need to step up to face them all.
These topics can be a struggle to digest when facing them all at once and can certainly be a rather distressing foray into a shockingly deep and scary rabbit-hole. In a nutshell it seems we should all be doing our part to make the world a better place to live in, and Thyme is happy to take a stand and our place along with those building better businesses to keep our planet safe.
This is something we take very seriously and we are proud to share with you some of the things we are doing to create less of an environmental impact as a food business and as a company living and working on Planet Earth.
We use packaging that is 100% recyclable. Our boxes can be broken down and recycled by our customers or alternatively we’ve included return packaging labels so that they may return the box and liner to us for reuse or recycling.
Our liner is made by Woolcool, an eco-friendly producer of 100% sheep’s wool liners made from ethically raised sheep. The material that keeps your food frozen is 100% biodegradable but is also 100% reusable, creating less rubbish in the landfills. Return labels are included in our shipments so that our customers can return the packaging and liner to us for reuse.
We do our best to use food packaging with the least environmental impact and while it cannot be reused, it is biodegradable. We take every effort to create food packaging that uses the least amount of plastic wrapping while still ensuring a solid seal to keep your food from freezer burn.
We only work with farmers who are dedicated to responsible and ethical practices. Provenance is very important to us and wherever possible we will source products directly from our own soil. England is full of incredible suppliers of meat, vegetables, and dairy products as well as an incredible range of artisans who are adhering to eco-friendly operations and responsible and sustainable ethics, all while making delicious foods we love to share with you. Thyme takes great pride in the farms, artisans, and companies we partner with and we put a lot of hard work into sourcing the absolute best when it comes to our products.
When we created this business, it was important that the foundation of our kitchen was to make great home-cooked foods that are not only nourishing for the soul but completely free of preservatives, added chemicals, GMO’s, or any other “nasties.” That remains our driving force in the kitchen and our promise to you.
We understand that food allergies plague many consumers and we are constantly in search of gluten and nut free products to offer those who still wish to enjoy satisfying meals that adhere to modern standards of food allergen safety.
It is no secret that an increasing number of people are either deciding or considering changing their diets to vegan or vegetarian for a multitude of reasons from overall health to environmental concerns. As a food business we believe that cutting down on the consumption of meat is proven to be better for the environment, better for your health, and not least importantly, better for the animals.
We like to think we’ve got our finger on the pulse of modern food trends and we get a lot of direction from communicating with our return customers. We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to our growing line of vegetarian and vegan foods, and we plan on pushing our development of new and exciting meat-free meals and products into the years to come.
It’s Thyme for Change
We hope that you will feel free to contact us with any questions or suggestions on how we can do better. We know there are areas where we can make a change, and we promise to continue to improve and keep a line of open communication with our customers until we get it right.
In the meantime, we hope that you will enjoy the foods that we lovingly create and that you know you are helping us to make the world a healthier, cleaner, and better place to live.
